About Us

Dermafilia started out as a Mexico City collective in 1994, allowing a group of young men to venture into the art of tattoo and piercing. In 1994 Wilson Posada, then 16,  began to work his way up at the Dermafilia Collective. He started piercing and tattooing in Culhuacán, a working class neighborhood where he is from, as well as other street markets like “el chopo” in Mex DF. Along the way, Posada’s uncle taught him about advanced jewelry, and he started to distribute the popular pieces. In 2007 Posada decided it was time to extend Dermafilia to San Francisco. He opened a store in The Mission district, currently the only Latin tattoo shop in the city. Dermafilia, love for the skin.

Does it hurt ?

Pain is really relative. Everyone has a different tolerance to pain. I'm not going to kid you, though - it does hurt. Just not that much. Some have compared it to a "hot scratching feeling". But, people would not be returning again and again for tattoo after tattoo if it hurt that bad! Most of us are not into pain, but the beauty of the tattoo and the pride associated with wearing it far outweighs a little pin-stick here and there. NOTE: Do not drink alcohol or take drugs for pain relief purposes prior to your tattoo session(s). Both aspirin and alcohol thin blood and promote excessive bleeding. Aspirin also decreases the clotting of blood, which will slow down healing.

Are Tattoos Safe ?

Yes, as long as you go to an artist that is following all recommended safety precautions.

Can I book appointments over the phone or Email ?

Consultation appointments are free and may be booked over the phone or Email.

Do you tattoo people under the age of 18 with parental consent ?

No. There are no exceptions.

Do you do piercings ?

Yes, we do

What can I do to prepare for my tattoo ?

Please bathe/shower and pop a breath mint. (I will do you the same courtesy.) Eat a good meal within 2 hours of your tattoo appt. No alcohol 8 hours before your tattoo. Avoid caffeine and energy drinks the day of your tattoo. Happy, healthy people heal better. Getting tattooed when you are sick, post or pre-surgery or extraordinarily stressed out is not ideal.

What should I expect while healing ?

A tattoo is a wound to your skin, in which you may experience some bruising, scaring, bleeding skin and/or blood infection, nerve and tissue damage. This new tattoo must be protected during the healing process. Clean dressing and a topical ointment arc required during the initial healing process. Allowing the new tattoo to be rubbed by rough clothing, scratching the tattoo or picking at the healing layer may allow microbes entrance as well as allow the inks to seep from the tattoo. Dermafilia can not assume liability for abuse or mistreatment your tattoo received during the healing process.

Might allergies be an issue ?

It is possible to be allergic to anything including tattoo inks. Similarly, some people react better to one brand of topical ointment then another. Dermafilia can not assume responsibility for how your body reacts to the inks or dressing products used for your new tattoo.

Are there medical conditions that prohibit my ability to get a tattoo ?

If you have hemophilia, hepatitis, H1V, diabetes or any medical condition which that may affect your blood circulation or your immune system, we require authorization from your physician prior to tattooing.

Is it normal for my new tattoo to scab ?

Scabbing, flaking, peeling, dryness are all natural parts of the healing process. Severe scabs that are deep and thick may indicate a need to change your aftercare routine and should be addressed with your tattoo artist.

Should I eat before I get tattooed ?

YES. It is ideal to eat within two hours of being tattooed. Please eat plenty of protein, and be well hydrated. Having stable blood sugar bolsters your immune system and helps the body deal with the fluctuation of endorphins, which are emitted during the tattoo process.
